PC BOARD
RECYCLING?
PC Board Recycling involves the responsible disposal and recycling of printed circuit boards (PCBs) found in electronic devices. These intricate boards contain valuable precious metals, as well as hazardous materials like lead and mercury. Recycling PCBs ensures that these resources are recovered safely and efficiently, mitigating the environmental and health risks associated with improper disposal.

PC boards contain recoverable materials and their value varies depending on the type and grade of the board.
Revive Africa works with recycling partners to identify, grade and process PC boards through established recycling channels.
Low Grade
Typically includes brown boards and some green boards with larger capacitors and aluminium or copper components.
Common sources: older televisions, radios, telephones, Hi-Fis and power supplies.
Indicative rate
Up to R20/kg
Medium-Low Grade
Mostly green boards with less than 50% coverage by ICs and chips.
Common sources: printers, scanners, smart TVs and WiFi routers.
Indicative rate
Up to R50/kg
Medium-High Grade
Boards with more than 50% coverage by ICs and chips, including boards with golden fingers and BGA yellow tails.
Common sources: CPU accessories, smart TVs, industrial printers and smart scanners.
Indicative rate
Up to R70/kg
Indicative rates are subject to assessment and current market conditions.
What affects
PC board value?
The value of a PC board can be influenced by its grade, component concentration, board composition, the presence of features such as connectors or gold fingers, the quantity available and prevailing market conditions.
For collectors and recycling partners, accurate identification and sorting can make it easier to separate different material types and understand which recycling stream is most appropriate for each grade.
Why grading
matters
Correct identification and sorting help ensure PC boards are directed into the appropriate recycling stream and their potential value can be assessed accurately.
PC boards should not be treated as one uniform material. Different boards can contain different combinations and concentrations of recoverable components, which means that correct grading helps support more accurate assessment and appropriate downstream processing.
Sorting also gives recycling partners greater visibility over what they are collecting and can help them distinguish higher-value material from lower-grade mixed electronic waste.
